1. What is the PISCES interactive map?

The interactive map is an online mapping tool that allows you to view different layers of data describing the Celtic Sea marine environment.

We are using the interactive map to show the various human impacts in the area. A key part of the project is sharing information between sectors and as our collective knowledge of the region grows, we'll be adding more layers.

2. Using the map interface

The image below describes the controls that are available.

a) Pan (move the map)

To pan (move the map) use the navigation buttons on the top left of the map to navigate North, South, East or West.

You can also move the mouse cursor over the map, click and drag the map (See 2i).

b) Zoom buttons and slider

To zoom in or out, use the zoom tool.

Clicking on + or - buttons will zoom in or out a small amount or you can drag the zoom slider up or down to zoom in or out incrementally.

c) Overview Map

You can also pan around using the map overview.

This helps you locate your position in the context of a larger geographical area. If you wish to hide the overview map, click the minus sign in the bottom right corner.

3. Using the View tab

The view tab allows you to display additional layers of information over your base map. This can include boundaries and limits, ecological information and human impacts. Multiple layers of data can be displayed on the map at the same time.

To display a data layer, first navigate to the view tab and click the menu link below it to select the category you want to display. Tick the boxes for any layers that you want to show.

The "Busy" Loading icon icon will appear in the bar above the map whilst the map is adding or removing information.

The layers in the view tab can be rearranged. This allows you to alter the order in which the layers are displayed.

Click on the layer and drag it. The layer heading turns green (as shown below) to indicate where it can be placed, release the mouse button to place the layer.

To clear the map of displayed data, reset the layers to the original order and return to the default map, click on the "Reset map to default" button.

a) Data Categories

The data has been organised into logical categories. Expand each category to view what data is available and the colour used to represent this selection on the map. You can add or remove layers on the map using the tick boxes to choose the data that you want to display.

4. Frequently Asked Questions

Why does the interactive map run slowly on my computer?

The performance of the interactive map is mostly dependent on the internet browser that you are using. If you are using Microsoft Windows, Mozilla Firefox or Google Chrome are both excellent choices. Internet Explorer versions 7 and 8 are supported, but don?t perform as well in applications like the interactive map. On a Mac, Safari and Mozilla Firefox are good choices (all links will open in a new window).
